Thanks for posting Rachel; today I feel the need to opine on stuff.
Like us, our canine friends are able to form abstract concepts... dogs can classify complex color photographs and place them into categorieshmmm...maybe they're extrapolating a bit too much the results of this experiment. Every dog owner knows dogs recognize their peers by sight... even if it's a poster of a dog, dogs do know how other dogs are supposed to look like (just like us with other human beings...that's why it's so hard to create convincing animated human beings by computer). That doesn't mean however that dogs have the ability to form abstract concepts "like us"... call me when someone teaches algebra to a dog.
btw, dogs see in black and white... they recognize the shape of the dog pics but color isn't necessary... wasn't that like common knowledge or something?
